Sermon 6/10/2019

June 10, 2019

Summary

Pentecost + John 14:23-31; Acts 2:1-21

In the beginning, God spoke and everything was created.

In six, twenty-four hour days, God spoke all things into existence.

God spoke and made light, there was day and night

God spoke and made land and water.

God spoke and there were trees and plants and shrubs.

God spoke and made the animals which walk upon the ground.

God spoke and made the birds of the air and the fish of the sea.

God spoke and made the sun and the moon, the stars and the planets.

God spoke and made man and woman.

On the seventh day of creation God rested, because the work of creation was complete.

God speaks and everything is good.

The Word of God, which is meant to be spoken, is good.

God speaks and He creates life and makes all things new.

Jesus said, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My Word, and My Father will love him.

Jesus said, “The Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.”

Jesus spoke His Sermon on the Mount.

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are you, when men revile you, and persecute you, and say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

On Good Friday Jesus spoke from the pulpit of His cross and the whole world listened.

God spoke, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.”

God spoke to the thief on the cross, “Today you will be with me in paradise.”

God spoke to the Virgin Mary and to Saint John, “Woman, behold, your son! Son, behold, your mother!”

God spoke, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”

God spoke, “I thirst” and the soldier came to Him with sour wine.

God spoke, “It is finished.”  Sin, the devil and all evil are defeated. They have no power over us.

The Son of God has paid the price for the sins of the world.

God spoke, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit” and He died.

In His speaking from the pulpit of His cross, Jesus spoke forgiveness, life and eternal salvation.

After Jesus died on the cross, was resurrected from the grave, He spent 40 days on earth before His ascension into heaven. More than 500 people witnessed His resurrection.

Jesus spoke to His disciples, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Jesus spoke to His disciples, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved, but he who does not believe will be condemned.”

Jesus stood in the midst of the disciples and showed them his hands that had been pierced. Jesus said, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you…Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

Jesus said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side, Do not be unbelieving, but believing.”

Jesus said to Thomas, “Because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

Jesus said to two men walking on the road, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! Didn’t the Christ have to suffer these things and enter into His glory?”

So too today, Jesus says to us, “Take, eat, this is My body given for you on the cross. Take and drink, this is My blood shed for you on the cross. In your eating and drinking, you have forgiveness, life and eternal salvation in heaven. As often as you do this, you proclaim My death and resurrection to all people, until I come again on the Last Day to judge the living and the dead.”

Today is Pentecost, fifty days since Jesus rose from the dead and ten days since He ascended into heaven, where He now sits at the right hand of the Father. Today, we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit, the Comforter.

We don’t see Him, but He is here. In the words of my mouth, that I speak in this place, the Holy Spirit is speaking and we are comforted. The Holy Spirit, given to each one of us on the day we were baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, gives us the gift of faith and keeps us in that one true faith until we die. The Holy Spirit works behind the scenes, that we would taste and see that the Lord is good, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love toward us forever.

God speaks and we listen. That is how it works in the kingdom of God.

God acts and we respond. That is how it works in the kingdom of heaven.

That is what happened on the day of Pentecost, the disciples were all filled with the Holy Spirit and they began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them ability. And men from every nation under heaven were in Jerusalem, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing the disciples speak in his own language the works and words that Jesus had spoken and believed and three thousand were baptized that day. In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.
